Changing an Electric Energy Pump
Procedures of replacing an electric fuel pump:
1. Disconnect the ground terminal at the battery.
2. Disconnect the electrical connectors on the electric fuel pump. Label the wires to aid in connecting it to the new pump. Reversing polarity on most pumps destroy the unit.
three. Fuel and vapor lines ought to be removed from the pump. Label the lines to help in connecting them to the new pump.
four. The inside tank pump can generally be taken out of the tank by removing the fuel sending unit retaining or lock ring. Even so, it may be required to take away the fuel tank to get at the retaining ring. Removal of the fuel tank can be achieved as described earlier in this chapter.
five. On a fuel pump that is outdoors the tank, eliminate the bolts holding it in spot. On in-tank models, loosen the retaining ring. PCB slip ring and sending unit out of the tank (if they are combined in 1 unit) and discard the tank O-ring seal.
six. To remove the pump, twist off the filter sock, then push the pump up till the bottom is clear of the bracket. Swing the pump out to the side and pull it down to totally free it from the rubber fuel line coupler. The rubber sound insulator among the bottom of the pump and bracket and the rubber coupler on the fuel line are commonly discarded since new ones are incorporated with t he replacement pump. Some pumps have a rubber jacket about them to quiet the pump. If this is the case, slip off the jacket and place it on the new pump.
7. Examine the replacement pump with the old 1. If needed, transfer any fuel line fittings from the old pump to the new one. Note the position of the filter sock on the pump so you can set up a new a single in the similar relative position.
8. When inserting the new pump back into the sending unit bracket, be cautious not to bend the bracket. Make sure the rubber sound insulator below the bottom of the pump is in spot. Set up a new filter sock on the pump inlet and reconnect the pump wires. Be completely certain you have right polarity. Replace the O-ring seal on the fuel tank opening, then put the pump and sender assembly back in the tank and tighten the locking ring by rotating it clockwise. Some pump/sender assembly units are secured by bolts.
9. If the fuel was removed from the automobile, replace it.
ten. Reconnect electrical slip rings . Reconnect the ground terminal at the battery.
12. Begin slip ring and verify all connections for fuel leaks.
Warning: Keep away from the temptation to test the new pump just before reinstalling the fuel tank, by energizing it with a couple of jumper wires. Running the pump dry can harm it since the pump relies on fuel for lubrication and cooling.
